Are grades all that important?

I had a chat with a friend, A, today since we’re both in the same tutorial class and we decided to go home together. Naturally, we were chatting for the whole length of the journey.

During the entire journey, A said that he wished to enter the civil service in Singapore and that his GPA was too low (Somewhere in the Second-Lower range) to enter the civil service in Singapore as they apparently only accept applicants from the second upper to first class honors range (and thereby ranting aboout GPA, how our cohort bell curve is so screwed it isn’t even funny…)

I’m not saying that its not good to have a plan for what to do with your life (in fact, I do think I need to learn from A) but to have a one single plan without any contingencies to smell the roses… such a life really is a pity.
